Overlooked Dangers: Wildlife Risks in Japan
When thinking about Japan most people do not consider the dangers associated with wildlife. This is generally because they do not know of or factor in the risk of attack by a bear. The northern island of Japan, named Hokkaido, is an incredibly scenic area with house prices very low even for quality houses. What you don’t see in the fine print however is the fact that aggressive 500kg Brown Bears live on this island too. There are multiple deaths each year due to bear attacks and many others that do not result in a fatality. Buying a house in a regional area, that either backs on to forests or is in close proximity, puts you at exceptional risk of encountering a brown bear and potentially losing your life. While I was there recently, a hiker was dragged from the trail by a brown bear and ripped limb from limb to pieces with his remains found the next day by authorities.
It is not safe to leave children unattended in these areas ever let alone even large adults so do not even think about buying in Hokkaido in regions that are close to forests as you may find it to be a choice that costs the life of you or someone you care about.
Outside of Hokkaido and across the rest of Japan, the Asiatic black bear is found in many areas. Whilst not as large, aggressive or dangerous, these bears still pose a significant risk to children and in some cases adults also. At the time of writing this, bear sightings around primary schools in the towns around Joetsu have resulted in parents no longer allowing their children to walk to school due to the risk being so high. As with all other hazards don’t be the misinformed sucker who buys a property under these circumstances only to find out there is no resale value due to the lack of desire by others to live near such danger. In recent years, bears generally have become far more aggressive as they are learning to no longer fear humans. There is little chance of protecting yourself from one also as obtaining a firearms license and firearm in Japan is practically impossible.
